Anchored retention, Gandhinagar

The brief

What made this one difficult

The client wanted the excavation clear of internal propping so the building frame could start immediately, and the cut face fell inside the campus boundary with room to anchor.

Weathered rock at variable depth made a single nail length impossible to price honestly.

What we did

The package, step by step

One contractor from the borelog to the final test certificate.

  1. Trial nails

Six trial nails pull-tested before the design length was fixed, avoiding a blanket over-design.

  2. Nailing

    1,240 m of soil nails at 89 mm, grouted and plate-anchored on a 1.5 m grid.

  3. Shotcrete

150 mm mesh-reinforced shotcrete face with weep drainage.

  4. Testing

Pull-out tests on 5% of nails, all exceeding design capacity.

“Trial nails before pricing saved us more than the trial cost. Nobody else offered that.”
